Thirsty Concrete: A Concrete Revolution

Within the concrete flooring industry, there are continuing technological advances and progresses that we can learn from when conducting our professional flooring service. Whether we are undertaking a floor joint repair or priming a floor ready for screeding, you can guarantee that within the last several years there have been advances that have made us consider our already expert practices, in order to pass on the benefits of the new process onto you, our valued customer.

Recently, news hit the papers of a revolutionary advancement in the field of concrete flooring, dubbed ‘thirsty concrete’. Whilst it has been in development for quite a while, it is seemingly starting to reach the point where it can be rolled out on a larger scale; Topmix Permeable concrete can actually absorb around 4,000 litres of water in around a minute, leaving very little trace and absolutely no noticeable puddles. The concrete has been designed in an attempt to tackle the problems of flash flooding in paved areas, roads and cycle paths, and to help combat any grouping of water on the whole.

How Does It Work?

So, you’ll probably be wondering how all that mesmerising magic takes place? Well, it is actually fairly simple. The permeable top layer of concrete enables the water seep through to the large pebbles below, which in turn sit on rubble, which is only held together loosely, to enable the water to be absorbed by the earth below.

What’s more, when roads become damaged, it can be an obstructive and inconvenient process which involves taking time to patch up the road, having closed it, causing delays and quite often leaving the road looking ugly and patchy. However, a project called PlasticRoad aims to roll out prefabricated blocks of road which enables the sections of road to be replaced and slotted into place – starting with Rotterdam, making it the first city in the world to lay down these plastic road tiles having been pre-constructed in a factory.

What a double-whammy of revolutionary ideas, ey? It’s great to see that in an industry where there are so many traditions, there are companies trying to constantly improve the techniques which make concrete an already fantastic surface for indoor and outdoor use. Concrete has so much to offer so many workplace environments and is essentially the only flooring choice in a plethora of industrial scenarios.
