Types of Flooring: Protecting Your Industrial Floor

The world of industrial flooring may seem pretty straight forward to us as experts, but there are a lot of different options to choose from, each with various different benefits making them advantageous for specific environments.

In any industrial or commercial setting, it’s extremely important that the right flooring choice is made right from the very start. Unlike in a domestic setting, the focus shouldn’t be on which flooring option looks the best – although this should be thought about, too – but more on which option is more suitable for your needs.

Safety is one of the main concerns when it comes to choosing the right flooring for your industrial or commercial environments and although each flooring type is safe to use, they may not be as suitable for use in certain environments as others. Durability is also something that many businesses look for in a flooring option.

Ensuring that your flooring is adequately protected is something that all businesses should concern themselves with. Not only will it save the business money in the long run by reducing the need for costly, regular repair and replacement, it will keep the floor lasting longer and performing adequately. Below are various different ways in which you can protect your flooring to ensure that you make the most of your investment.

Epoxy Resin

Image3Epoxy resin is one of the most popular floor covering options for many industrial and commercial settings. This is because it boasts a wide range of benefits such as anti static and anti slip properties which many industries require in order to be able to operate safely and effectively.

It is also one of the more durable options, boasting a long life and guaranteed durability, even in high traffic environments. The reason it is this durable lies in the formation of the epoxy resin. It is created using a resin in liquid form which is then combined with a liquid hardener to solidify the resin into a durable, reliable coating for the floor.

In addition to being durable, it is also known for being resistant to a wide range of chemicals and bacteria – again something which many industries rely upon. There is no need for grouting which makes it much easier to keep clean and maintain, and reduces the chance of bacteria that often collect and grow in the grout of flooring and tiling.

All these benefits make epoxy resin the perfect flooring choice for a wide range of businesses in a variety of industries. These include:

There are various types of epoxy resin, which all have different characteristics with regards to performance characteristics, so if you feel like you could benefit from using epoxy resin, it’s important to talk to an expert before investing.

Floor Screeding

If you already have an existing concrete floor but feel like it could do with an upgrade or re-levelling then floor screeding is the perfect solution for you.

Floor screeds are essential for many industrial floors which have become unlevelled through constant use and damage. Floor screeding can usually be completed within a 12-24 hour period- much faster than other alternatives, which can also be more expensive methods of levelling out a floor.

Flood screeding also doesn’t require your floor to be ground down to flatten the surface; it is simply laid on top of the existing concrete to a specified tolerance. This process is also not just limited to indoor use; outdoor flooring can also benefit from being levelled off using floor screeding.

There is some preparation that needs to be undertaken before the process can be done. The concrete which the floor screed will be placed on top of will need to be structurally sound, completely dry and not have any form of coating or treatment on it. If your flooring does have a coating or treatment, this should be completely removed before the floor screeding can begin.

Floor screed is self smoothing, fast drying and dimensionally stable, giving you peace of mind when it comes to protecting and upgrading your concrete floor.

Floor Joint Re-Sealing

The failure of flooring joints is one of the most frequent maintenance issues that many businesses come across with regards to their flooring, especially with floors who endure heavy traffic on a daily basis.

If you notice any issues with the sealing of your flooring, it is essential to call in an expert right away to reduce the chances of further, more costly, damage to your floor. These issues generally arise with concrete flooring, but they can occur in other flooring types too.

Although joint wear often happens unexpectedly and can’t always be avoided, it is important to get any sign of wear and tear looked at as soon as it appears to avoid requiring a more expensive repair or replacement should the damage get worse.

Joint re-seals can be done quickly and effectively by cutting, cleaning and replacing the joint in a time efficient manner so as to keep your floor strong and durable for many years to come without needing to invest in a whole new flooring solution.

Some repairs will require filling with a specialist repair mortar and then sealed with a sealant to create a seamless repair which isn’t noticeable, but still provides a durable repair option which is much more preferable to a whole new floor installation.

These repairs are so durable and hardwearing that they can extend the life of your floor for many years and have been proven to withstand even the heaviest of traffic.

There are many different ways in which you can protect your flooring, and it is strongly advised that you do so to ensure that you are making the most of your investment. It’s more cost effective to implement prevention, rather than deal with the consequences of not protecting your flooring in an adequate manner.
