BioConcrete: The Future of Concrete?

At PSR Flooring, we’re always intrigued and interested in the global advances of the world of concrete. Through conducting anything from applying our high quality resin flooring to undertaking our professional floor grinding, we’re continually looking at ways that we can make our service more effective, efficient and innovative so that we can pass the innovation and improved quality of flooring onto our valued customers.

Quite often we’ll discover a better screed or an improved resin, for example, however every so often there comes such a revolutionary idea that we simply can’t help but get excited. The concept of BioConcrete doesn’t just have our experts at PSR excited about where the future of concrete may be headed, but the whole industrial flooring world.

Introducing BioConcrete

BioConcrete may look like many other forms of concrete, but the revolutionary nature of the material is that it can actually self-repair. Yes, you read that correctly… BioConcrete is the brainchild of concrete specialist Eric Schlangen and microbiologist, Henk Jonkers and has the ability to heal its own cracks.

Whilst concrete is an incredibly tough and durable material, and perfect for many industrial scenarios, it can be prone to cracking under particular environments and atmospheres. Schlangen and Jonkers have been undertaking research at Delft Technical University whereby they have been incorporating Bacillus genus bacteria inside biodegradable capsules, along with calcium lactate, and mixing this into cement.

How does it Self-Repair?

Well, once water reaches the capsule through a crack which has developed in the concrete, the bacteria microbes are awoken from their dormant state. They then begin multiplying, thus causing the calcium lactate to turn into calcite – otherwise known as limestone – and help to seal the crack. Whilst research is still somewhat underway into the construction conditions, size of cracks and different scenarios that they BioConcrete is able to work at, it is believed that its use in construction projects will be seen as early as next year! So watch this space!

We always look forward to being able to implement such new flooring technologies, so with something just so revolutionary we are particularly eagerly awaiting the opportunity to be able to see such construction materials first hand. Each of our flooring specialists are highly trained and qualified in the implementation and the professional use of a whole array of industrial flooring technology, so if you would like to benefit from our specialist know-how and industry experience, don’t hesitate to give us a call. You can contact us on 01226 382864 where one of our friendly experts will be eagerly awaiting your call.
